If you are looking to add a Kia or Hyundai to your insurance, you may have a hard time due to a new social media trend.  This trend is teaching people how to hotwire certain vehicles that do not have an engine immobilizer.  This has caused many companies to halt writing new business with these vehicles.

How do you know if your vehicle falls under this risk? Your vehicle may be included if it is a Kia between the years of 2011-2021, or a Hyundai between 2015-2021 with a standard metal key.  If your key is kept in a plastic housing, or in a key fob for keyless entry, you more than likely have an engine immobilizer and do not have to worry.   Higher vehicle models with push button starts are also more likely to have the immobilizer.

Kia and Hyundai are offering free security software updates to the owners of these vehicles.

Hyundai owners can go to Hyundai's website, where you can enter their VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to find out if they are eligible for the software update.   They can also call 800-633-5151 for information.  The free upgrade will be performed by Hyundai.  It usually takes less than an hour for installation.  You will then receive a window decal that shows your vehicle has been equipped with the enhanced anti-theft technology.

If you are unable to get the software update, you have other options.  You can use a steering wheel lock to deter a criminal.  You can also purchase Firstech/Compustar security kits from your dealerships.
