Ok, ok -- last "spring cleaning" post for awhile. Today's topic: stuff you should do to "spring clean" the outside of your house. Because, from an insurance agent's perspective, this stuff matters! Not to mention, a well-kept lawn just looks nice (hello: curb appeal!).
1. Mow your lawn. Mowing will force you to pick up loose sticks and branches -- which, if you're noticing lots of dead branches in a particular area, you might need to do some pruning. Dead branches aren't just unsightly; they're also a safety hazard. Spring and summer thunderstorms can cause old branches to break off the tree, causing damage to your home or car -- or your neighbor's.
2. Do an exterior survey. After a harsh winter, is there any paint that needs touching up? Wood that's rotted out? Screens that need repair? Take inventory and do these repairs before the heat of summer sets in!
3. Check your deck! Is the sealant in good shape?If it's chipping or peeling, power wash it down, sand it, and reseal it. You'll be happy you did come barbecue season!
4. Clear gutter clutter! Get on the roof and clear out leaves/sticks/fallen holiday lights from your gutters. While you're there, check your roof for broken or missing shingles. Hire a contractor to fix anything, no matter how small. The smallest leak in your roof can lead to mold, water damage, and, over time, even structural damage!
5. Make sure your HVAC is clean and running properly. Clean off any debris from fall/winter -- and schedule that tune-up! A properly working HVAC unit can save you lots of money during those July heatwaves.
Easy, right? A few simple steps, and you (and your home) will be set for summer!
