When planning a summer vacation, the question of whether or not to purchase travel insurance is a tricky one.
Most credit card companies offer some form of travel insurance to cardholders who use their card when booking a vacation. (That's an important caveat: you can only purchase travel insurance from the credit card company from which the vacation was booked.)
Recently, WalletHub compared the travel insurance offered by 92 different credit card companies. Of those 92 companies 93% offered some form of travel accident coverage, with the average amount of coverage coming in at around $416,000. But after that, the amount of coverage, types of coverage and other important insurance details varied wildly. Here's what they found:
-
36% of the cards surveyed offer lost luggage insurance and cover an average of $2,600 for losses. 25% cover delayed luggage; 9% cover both lost and delayed luggage.
-
32% of credit cards offer trip cancellation insurance and, on average, those cards provide $3,200 of coverage.
-
Just 6% offer trip delay insurance, with an average of $500 in coverage.
Among the survey's top performers, Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase JP Morgan Reserve and Citi Prestige all ranked at the top. To see how your card stacks up, check out the full WalletHub survey here.
Of course, your insurance company will also offer travel insurance -- and you may want to contact your agent to check out what options are available to you!
