By now most parents are aware that they can get significant discounts for their teen drivers if they can show proof that their teen driver is a good student. Before the “why” behind a good student diving discount the following are some recent teen driving statistics from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. Teen driving fatalities have decreased since the 1970’s however the 2012 statistics show there is still room for improvement on educating our teens on good driving skills. Here are some 2012 teen driving stats:
- In 2012 there were 2,823 teen fatalities between the ages of 13-19
- 2 out of 3 teen driving fatalities in 2012 involved teen males
- Here is a staggering stat, 54% of teenage passenger deaths occurred while a teen was driving
- In 2012, June and July had the highest number of teen driver fatalities
- Also in 2012, 53% of teen driving fatalities occurred on Friday, Saturday and Sunday
In light of these statistics most insurance companies offer the good student driving discount. Studies have shown that good students, typically having a 3.0 GPA or better are better drivers. The “why” is relative to the following three facts; good students tend to make better decisions while on the road. Studies also show that good students spend more time studying and less time on the road. Finally, good students are deemed all around more responsible than students with lower grade point averages.
To receive a good student discount students must prove their status my submitting their official transcripts showing their 3.0 GPA or better. This must be provided at each renewal period to continue receiving the good student driving discount. Today, many students are home-schooled. For home schooled students any test score such as the PSAT, ACT or SAT with a score in the top 20% will qualify that student for the good student discount.
Is the savings for the good student driving discount significant? Yes! Many insurers offer up to 25% off of the teen driver’s premium. Good grades equal significant savings in car insurance premiums.
