We all know we shouldn’t text and drive. So when Apple introduced its CarPlay system, we had lots of questions.. and concerns. Here’s a brief breakdown of the issues at play.
What:
The CarPlay is a system that integrates the iPhone with in-car entertainment systems. The setup includes a console touchscreen as well as buttons on the steering wheel that activate Siri, Apple's voice command system. CarPlay allows drivers to make calls, listen to voicemails, hear and dictate text messages, get directions via Apple Maps and access Spotify and other music services. It’s basically an iPhone/iPad for your dashboard.
Arguments For:
It should come as no surprise that Apple fully backs the safety of its product. Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of iPhone and iOS product marketing, says CarPlay "lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction." In fact, the tech titan market the product as a safer alternative to talking on the phone (or, of course, texting).
Many states have banned cell phone use while driving, as it can force drivers to take their eyes off the road and their hands off the steering wheel. Something like CarPlay, therefore, becomes an alternative to allow drivers to have their phone handy.
Arguments Against:
Despite being “hands free,” the National Safety Council (NSC) warns that even hands-free cellphone use can significantly increase the potential for accidents because it forces drivers to multitask. According to the NSC, when multitasking behind the wheel, ”a form of inattention blindness occurs, which results in drivers having difficulty monitoring their surroundings, seeking and identifying potential hazards, and responding to unexpected situations."
Different from a new car’s digital interface or GPS system, the CarPlay increases the range of applications available to drivers, literally making apps available at a driver’s fingertips.
While impressive, the CarPlay opens up a whole new can of worms and enticements while operating a vehicle. Taking your eyes away from the road, whether it’s to push “call” on your CarPlay or simply switch the radio station, is always a risk.
Drive safely!
