It has been COLD around here lately -- and there's still lots more time before Mr. Groundhog makes any predictions about spring.
In addition to being a nuisance, cold weather can also wreak havoc on your pipes, gutters, cars -- you name it! Here are 5 tips to help avoid any weather-related damage to your property this winter:
1. Check your attic
Make sure there aren't any leaks, which can lead to roof damage, ice dams and higher heating bills! While you're up there, insulate any areas where you notice drafts and save money on those winter heating bills!
2. Service your heater
Your HVAC unit works hard in the winter, so make sure to give it the proper amount of TLC! Have a professional come out for a tune up, and fix anything that needs fixing (it's worth it! If you have an older unit, consider adding Equipment Breakdown Coverage to cover extra repairs). Also -- replace that furnace filter every 4-6 weeks for premium heater performance!
3. Turn off your hoses
If you have external hoses, make sure you shut the water off (usually you'll do this from your basement). This will help you avoid any pipes bursting/basement leaks!
4. Use your garage
Ok -- some of us don't have a garage -- but if you do, use it! Clean it out and park your car inside. (Sell that old treadmill on Craigslist!) It will keep your car in much better shape -- and save you valuable time in the morning as you won't have to defrost your windshield/scrape ice off/shovel out your car.
5. Review your policies!
It goes without saying, but make sure you know what your policies cover, whether they're up-to-date, and if you need to add/change anything. If you have any questions at all, we are happy to discuss all things insurance with you!
