You may not think of Thanksgiving as a dangerous holiday -- but lots can go wrong as you hustle around your kitchen prepping your family's feast!
Avoid any mishaps on Thursday by following these 10 simple tips:
1. Start prepping early to pace yourself and avoid the rush-around-the-kitchen.
2. Unless you're a pro chef, don't deep fry your turkey.
This is a potentially dangerous method best left to the pros! Also, it goes without saying, but all turkey deep frying should be done outside, using protective gear, on a fully thawed-out bird.
3. The turkey is done once the internal temp reaches 165F.
If you don't have a meat thermometer -- get one! You don't want salmonella ruining your Thanksgiving!
4. Fully disinfect all surfaces as you prep -- especially after handling your bird.
It's always a good idea to use designated cutting boards for vegetables and meat.
5. Keep the kids out of the kitchen!
There are other times for your little sous chefs to help!
6. Unplug all appliances when not in use.
7. Make sure cords aren't tripping hazards.
8. Don't leave the kitchen unattended!
9. If you or someone else gets burned, soak in cool water and wrap with a dry bandage.
Make sure the water is cool, not ice-cold. If the burns seem like anything more than superficial (first degree), go to an Urgent Care immediately.
10. Know your limits!
Don't stress over making a million different dishes. And if you're not comfortable cooking a turkey, that's what the deli is there for!
Have a great Thanksgiving! And remember to shop local on Small Business Saturday.
