With warmer weather here, perhaps you’re dusting off the motorcycle for the summer! Or, maybe you’re in the market for one of these fun (and fuel-efficient!) vehicles.
Before you hop on your hog, please consider the following:
1. Consider upping your liability coverage
Liability insurance is required in most states; however, how much coverage a driver has can vary. Liability insurance pays for damages or injuries you cause in an accident, as well as your legal defense if needed.
Quite frankly, driving a motorcycles is riskier than a car - and injuries can be very serious (and costly). Liability insurance pays (up to your set limits) for damages or injuries you cause in an accident, as well as your legal defense if needed. Because these costs can quickly soar to hundreds of thousands of dollars in the event of severe injuries, property damage or law suits, a good liability policy is highly recommended.
2. Take a motorcycle safety course
New riders are strongly encouraged to take the Basic Motorcycle Safety Course. It is one of the best ways to learn to ride. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Basic RiderCourse is designed specifically for beginners and teaches all the important basics of operating a motorcycle. It typically consists of two or three sessions that include a total of five hours of classroom instruction and activities and 10 hours of on-bike riding instruction.
Even seasoned riders are advised to take a safety course, which helps riders brush up on crash avoidance, defensive driving and even maneuvering.
Another perk? Completing one of these courses may lower your insurance!
3. Always wear protective gear.
In the last decade, Motorcycle-related deaths increased by 55%. Increased use of cell phones and distracted driving are surely part of this figure. Motorcycle drivers should protect themselves as by always wearing long pants and sleeves, and, of course, a helmet.
If you just purchased a motorcycle or are considering doing so, be sure to give us a call to discuss your insurance options!
